Why does astrology (not) work?

The sky as a clock: astrology beyond the constellations

The most popular argument against astrology is correct, and it is irrelevant

Anyone setting out to debunk astrology usually begins here. "The constellations no longer line up." And that is true. Because of the precession of the earth's axis, a slow gyroscopic wobble that carries the axis through a full circle every 26,000 years, the constellations in the background of our sky have by now shifted almost thirty degrees from where they stood when Babylonian astrology was developed. Someone born on 1 April is not, at the moment of birth, looking at Aries as a constellation, but at Pisces.

That is correct. But it does not touch the core of Western astrology.

Western, tropical astrology has in fact never been based on the constellations as such. The system divides the earth's orbit around the sun into twelve equal segments of thirty degrees each, beginning at the spring equinox, the astronomical moment when day and night are exactly equal in length. That zero point is not tied to the constellation of Aries; it is a point in space that moves along with the precession of the earth's axis. Tropical astrologers therefore do not work with constellations but with planetary positions, the geometric relationships between the planets and the earth at a given moment in time.

In other words: it is not the stars that count. It is the planets. And they are still exactly where they are.


What we do know: the sky is not biologically neutral

Before we speculate, it is worth taking stock of what science has already given us. Because on one point there is no debate at all: the cosmos influences life on earth continuously and measurably.

The sun. The eleven- to twelve-year solar cycle, characterised by fluctuations in solar flares, solar wind and electromagnetic radiation, correlates demonstrably with biological processes on earth. Research shows links with cardiac arrhythmia, sleep disorders, blood pressure, mood swings and even the incidence of epileptic seizures. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and several European research groups record these effects as a standard part of space weather research. The sun is not a metaphor. It is a biologically active force.

The moon. That the moon drives the ocean tides through gravity is uncontested. But there is more: menstrual cycles averaging 29.5 days coincide with the lunar month. Clinical studies show elevated admission rates in psychiatric institutions around the full moon. Whether all the mechanisms are fully understood is another question, but that the moon does something biologically is barely disputed any more.

The earth's magnetic field. This field, which envelops the earth and fluctuates continuously, turns out to serve countless life forms as a means of navigation and a biological reference. Migratory birds read it like a map. Sharks orient themselves by it. Turtles use the geomagnetic field to find their way back to the beach where they were born after swimming thousands of kilometres. Salmon do the same. Magnetotactic bacteria literally contain magnetite crystals with which they perceive the field.

And in humans? Neuroscientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) published in the journal eNeuro in 2019 that human brains respond measurably to changes in the earth's magnetic field, through alpha-wave suppression, a response characteristic of sensory processing. We are not immune. We are merely less aware.

The conclusion so far: the sky influences life on earth. That is not astrology. That is established science.


The question that remains: is the moment of birth special?

If the environment is continuously biologically relevant, the question is no longer whether the cosmos influences us, but whether the moment of birth specifically leaves an imprint that helps determine character traits.

Here things become more speculative, but not more unreasonable.

Hypothesis 1: Geomagnetic imprinting at birth

The planets of our solar system influence the heliosphere, the vast magnetic bubble the sun blows around the entire system. Jupiter is the dominant player in it besides the sun itself, with a magnetic field fourteen times as strong as the earth's. The shifting positions of the planets cause subtle but measurable fluctuations in the solar wind, which in turn modulates the earth's magnetic field.

The hypothesis is this: at the moment of birth, the first time a newborn is fully and unprotectedly exposed to the outside world, the developing nervous system receives a unique electromagnetic "snapshot" of its environment. That configuration could, through neuronal and hormonal processes, lay down a lasting pattern, comparable to epigenetic imprinting by other environmental factors shortly after birth.

That the nervous system of newborns is exceptionally sensitive to environmental factors is beyond dispute. Whether electromagnetic environmental variables form part of that sensitivity has not yet been definitively answered. But the question is certainly testable.

A candidate mechanism from a related system

The question of which physical channel transmits the planetary influence at birth need not remain entirely open. An adjacent system that uses the same planetary positions as its foundation, Human Design, offers a concrete hypothesis: the neutrino stream.

Every second, some 65 billion neutrinos per square centimetre pass through our bodies, originating in the nuclear fusion of the sun. They penetrate everything, but they have mass, as the Nobel Prize in Physics confirmed in 2015. Mass means they can form part of an information-carrying field. The planets, which continuously modulate the heliosphere, each give that stream a "colour" of their own. The configuration at the moment of birth would then be imprinted not only through the geomagnetic field, but also directly, through the neutrinos streaming unhindered through the newborn body at that moment.

Two independent mechanisms pointing to the same moment make the hypothesis scientifically more robust than either one alone. Whether both are at work, we do not know. That both are theoretically possible is hard to deny.

Hypothesis 2: The first breath as a phase transition

In complexity science we have the concept of the critical transition, the moment at which a system passes in a short space of time from one stable state to another. At such moments a system is maximally sensitive to even small external influences. Water freezing, crystals forming, neural networks locking in a lasting pattern: all are examples of systems that during the transition "agree" with their surroundings.

Birth is such a transition. Within seconds the blood circulation changes completely, the oxygen supply through the placenta stops, the airway circulation is activated, cortisol production shoots up and the nervous system registers light, sound, temperature and the electromagnetic environment directly for the first time.

If there is a moment at which environmental conditions can lay down deep biological patterns, this is it.

Hypothesis 3: The horoscope as a mirror, not as a cause

The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung introduced the concept of synchronicity: two simultaneous events that are meaningfully connected without one causing the other. In his view the planets do not cause character; they are a clock that reads off what is already under way in the larger system.

A thermometer does not cause a fever. It measures it.

This is the more modest and perhaps scientifically most honest formulation: the planetary configuration at the moment of birth is a readable pattern of the state of the solar system. Whether that state also reflects, not causes but reflects, the state of the newborn, is a question science has not yet asked, let alone answered.


Michel Gauquelin: the uncomfortable statistician

In the 1950s the French psychologist and statistician Michel Gauquelin set out to refute astrology. He eventually gathered the birth data of more than a hundred thousand people, linked to their profession and achievements.

What he found was uncomfortable. Elite athletes turned out to have been born statistically more often when Mars had just risen above the horizon or had reached the highest point of its daily arc. Famous scientists correlated with Saturn. Actors with Jupiter.

Gauquelin was a sceptic himself. He published his findings as an anomaly, not as proof of astrology. His methods were checked several times by independent researchers, with mixed results. The debate has never been fully settled. But the fact that a statistician who set out to debunk astrology found data he could not himself explain deserves intellectually more than a shrug.


In 1492 Christopher Columbus proved by accident that the earth was not flat, not by proving the theory, but by coming back. The round earth had always existed. What was missing was a framework to understand it and a method to measure it.

Magnetism existed for thousands of years before we could quantify it. Bacteria caused disease long before we could see them. Gravitational waves rippled through space for more than a billion years before we had, in 2015, the instruments to detect them.

"Not proven" is not a synonym for "impossible". It is an invitation to look more closely.

Astrology in its tropical form, based on planetary positions rather than constellations, makes a claim that, given the known workings of the solar system, the biology of the newborn nervous system and the geomagnetic environment of the earth, cannot theoretically be ruled out. Anyone wishing to deny it needs a proof of impossibility that does not exist.

What we say is this: the sky influences the earth, that much we know. Whether the moment of birth is special within that influence, we do not yet know. But the question is legitimate, the theory is coherent, and the research is still in its infancy.

Perhaps that is enough to take it seriously.
