Human Design: the system that was ahead of science

An uncomfortable beginning

In 1987 the Canadian musician and media figure Robert Alan Krakower, later known as Ra Uru Hu, went through an intense eight-day experience on the Spanish island of Ibiza which, by his own account, delivered him a fully worked-out system. He called it Human Design. Sceptics waved it away as channelling. What they could not foresee: one of the central scientific claims Ra made would be confirmed 28 years later by the Nobel Prize in Physics.

That deserves closer examination.

The first foundation: neutrinos

Ra claimed that the universe is traversed by an endless stream of neutrinos, and crucially, that those neutrinos have mass. The latter was, in 1987 and for long afterwards, in direct contradiction with the prevailing scientific consensus. The Standard Model of particle physics regarded neutrinos as massless "ghost particles" that shot through everything at the speed of light without any interaction.

In 1991 Ra published his claim in The Black Book, his first formal description of the system. Neutrinos have mass, that was the scientific basis of Human Design.

In 2015 the Japanese physicist Takaaki Kajita and the Canadian physicist Arthur B. McDonald received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Their discovery: neutrinos oscillate between three forms, something only possible if they possess mass. The Nobel committee put it as follows: "The discovery has changed our understanding of the innermost workings of matter."

Ra Uru Hu had said this 24 years earlier.

This does not prove Human Design. But it calls for serious intellectual attention.

What neutrinos really are

To understand why this matters, it is worth pausing on neutrinos, because they are quite simply extraordinary.

At this very moment, as you read this, some 65 billion neutrinos per second are streaming through every square centimetre of your body. They come mainly from the sun, where they are produced by nuclear fusion. They penetrate the earth as though it were not there. They pass straight through lead, through rock, through water, through you, almost without interaction.

Almost. But not entirely.

That "almost" is precisely the point. Neutrinos interact with matter exceedingly rarely, but not never. They have mass, so small that we still cannot measure it precisely, but real. And in quantum physics the rule holds: mass means a particle can form part of an information-carrying field.

Ra's claim was this: the planets of our solar system act as filters and modulators of the neutrino stream that flows from the sun (and from distant stars) through the solar system. Each planet gives the stream a "colour" of its own, a subtle modulation. The configuration of those planets at the moment of your birth determines which neutrino information flows through you at that specific moment, and thereby fixes a pattern in your biological system.

Whether this mechanism is strong enough to have measurable biological consequences, we do not know. But that neutrinos stream through us, that is not a theory. That is reality, every second.

The second foundation: 64 gates, 64 hexagrams, 64 codons

The architecture of Human Design is based on 64 gates, modelled on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the Chinese oracle book that is at least three thousand years old.

Here something striking begins.

Human DNA consists of four nucleotides which, in groups of three called codons, form the instructions for producing amino acids and proteins. Four nucleotides in groups of three yield exactly 64 unique combinations. 64 codons. The complete alphabet of the genetic code.

The I Ching works with two principles, yin and yang, in groups of six lines. Two to the power of six yields exactly 64 unique hexagrams.

Human Design has exactly 64 gates.

Is this coincidence? Mathematically it is an exact number that happens to coincide across three entirely different systems: a three-thousand-year-old Chinese wisdom system, modern molecular biology, and a system that was "received" in 1987. The Swiss scholar Martin Schönberger described the numerical correspondence between the I Ching and DNA as early as 1973 in his book Der Genetische Code und der I Ching. Ra Uru Hu built this connection explicitly into the architecture of Human Design.

Whether the 64 gates in Human Design genuinely correspond to genetic processes has not been demonstrated. But that the numerical structure of the human genome and an ancient oracle system coincide exactly is a fact that science has to this day not explained.

A system of multiple layers

Human Design is unique in the way it combines existing systems:

Astrology, the planetary positions at the moment of birth and eighty-nine days before it (the moment at which, according to Ra, foetal consciousness develops) form the two layers of every Human Design chart. The astronomical basis is identical to that of tropical astrology: actual planetary positions, not the shifted constellations.

The I Ching, the 64 hexagrams form the gates of the system. Each planetary position is translated into a hexagram representing a specific quality.

The Kabbalah, the Tree of Life supplies the geometric structure of the Bodygraph: the diagram of nine centres and the channels connecting them.

The chakra system, the seven classical chakras are expanded into nine centres, each with a specific biological and psychological function.

Genetics, the 64 codons as a structural mirror of the 64 gates.

None of these systems is scientifically proven in itself. But each describes, from a different angle and a different cultural tradition, the same underlying question: how does the individual relate to the larger pattern of which it is part?

What we know, what we suspect, and what is still waiting

Let us be honest about the levels.

What is established:

Neutrinos exist and have mass (Nobel Prize 2015).
65 billion neutrinos stream every second through every centimetre of our body.
The planets influence the heliosphere and with it the flow and modulation of particles through the solar system.
Human DNA has exactly 64 codons.
The I Ching has exactly 64 hexagrams.
Environmental factors at birth have demonstrable biological consequences, this is widely documented in epigenetics.

What is plausible but unproven:

That the planetary modulation of neutrinos is strong enough to lay down a biological pattern at birth.
That the 64-structure of the I Ching and DNA is more than a numerical coincidence.
That the nine centres of Human Design correspond to specific biological systems.

What is still waiting:

A testable research protocol that systematically investigates the claims of Human Design.
New instruments capable of making neutrino interactions visible at the biological level.

The man who was ahead of science

There is one question every honest sceptic has to put to themselves: if Ra Uru Hu wrote in 1991 that neutrinos have mass, and established science said he was wrong, and the 2015 Nobel Prize proved him right, what does that say about the rest of what he described?

It proves nothing. One correct prediction does not make a system true.

But it does not rule it out either. And in intellectual honesty that is the only thing we can say at present: Human Design is not proven, but neither is it refutable. The question deserves serious research, not because of belief, but because of the facts that already exist.

The neutrinos are streaming through you as you read this. That is not a metaphor.

Beyond the blueprint: what aspects and orbs could add

Human Design currently works in binary terms: a gate is active or it is not, a channel is defined or open. But astrology, the system on which the planetary layer of Human Design is directly based, has a refinement that the HD chart has not yet incorporated: aspects and orbs.

Aspects are the geometric angles between planets: the conjunction (0°), opposition (180°), trine (120°), square (90°) and sextile (60°). They describe not only which planet is active, but how planets stand in relation to one another and amplify or strain each other's influence. An orb is the tolerance zone around such an exact angle: an aspect that is almost exact works differently from one far from exactness.

If neutrinos are the shared mechanism of both astrology and Human Design, and the planets modulate that stream, then aspects are in effect the interference patterns between those modulations. Two planets in opposition create a very different neutrino pattern from two planets in conjunction.

The idea that this astrological refinement can also be applied to the HD blueprint suggests itself as soon as you take the mechanism seriously. It would make the individual chart considerably more specific than the current system. This research is on our agenda, as one of the next steps in the development of Consteia.
